Dunn - Osborn - Battey Family Papers, 1744-1927
"Ms. Coll. 1163 (9 boxes). Correspondence, account books, receipts, bills and other financial papers, notebook, printed items, and other miscellaneous papers primarily of the Dunn, Osborn and Battey families. Letters of Nathan Dunn (1782-1844) discuss trade with China and his experiences there. Household and farming bills and receipts of Restore S. Lamb, Rhoda O. Lamb and Phebe Osborn. Letters of Nancy S. Battey, 1864-1865, some while teaching free black children in Yorktown. "
During the Depression, Dunn gave Haverford College $20,000 to cover $19,000 in debts.

"The papers of William Warder Cadbury consist of correspondence in the period 1908-1950, documents relating to Cadbury's organizational affiliations, photographs and material written by and about Cadbury ...Cadbury writes about his desire to become a China medical missionary in 1908 and his interest in founding a Christian medical school in China, his impact teaching Christianity to Chinese students at Canton Christian College (later Lingnan University), as well as his life and work in China and Japan's war on China; the work of his wife, Catherine Cadbury, supervising many local schools; reference to his internment by the Japanese army, and the liberation of Canton in 1949; the orphans of Canton ...Finally, there are documents produced by and about organizations with which Cadbury was involved in the period 1923-51, including Canton Hospital, Canton International Red Cross, Direct China Relief Incorporated, Kwangtung International Relief Committee, Canton Committee for Justice to China and the China Medical Missionary Association."
The library recently received many, many new boxes that add material to this collection. It hasn't been indexed fully yet, but is sure to offer a wealth of information. This is one of Haverford's most valuable collections pertaining to China.

"There is an accumulation of information prepared by AB on...her trip to Europe and Asia, including China, in 1946, Anna Brinton's notebooks from the period in Japan in 1953-54, as well as in Korea in 1954 and on travel home through Hawaii in 1954. This is separate from the diaries which she kept from 1936-1954, and then appointment-book style diaries, 1955- 1968. There are also glass slides of silhouettes of Quakers and photographs taken in Japan...The collection continues with the correspondence of Howard Brinton... the trip to Japan and finally, settling in as co-director of Pendle Hill (1936). He maintained connections and interest in many Japanese friends and acquaintances..."

- "Very detailed letter describes extensive looting, burning, and deaths in north China, which began in Beijing when some troops mutinied because they were not paid. Few foreigners have become involved, but many students at the writer's college and other colleges have left. Yuan to become Provisional President of the Republic of China. Some American soldiers are in China. Also, six photos of Chinese and one, presumably, of the writer's wife, Constance"

Japan
Ayusawa, Iwao Frederick, (1894-1972) Papers, 1918-1964
"Iwao Frederick Ayusawa was born Oct. 15, 1894, and died Nov. 30, 1972 in France. In 1911 he went to Hawaii as a recipient of the Friend Peace Scholarship. He graduated from Haverford College in 1917 where he concentrated his studies in the fields of sociology and social service (especially social and labor problems). After graduating from Haverford, he attended New York School of Social Work affiliated with Columbia University. His major field of study was labor problems and his Phd dissertation [dedicated to Margaret Loring Thomas] was titled "Inter-national Labor Legislation" which was finished after he attended the First Session of the International Labor Conference held at Washington, D.C., in 1919. After graduating from Columbia in 1920, he went to Geneva, Switzerland to serve the Japanese Delegation to the International Labor Organization, later working there as an ILO staff member. In 1934 he returned to Japan to take the position of Director of the Tokyo Branch Office of the ILO until 1939 and the advent of WWII. After the war, he served on the Central Labor Relations Board until 1948 when he left to attend international conferences. In 1952 he joined the faculty of International Christian University in Japan."

"Edith Sharpless' letters to Lydia Cope Sharpless, Fred and Louise Sharpless and John and Edward Rich begin with her shipboard letter en route to Japan, descriptions of the way in which foreigners, including missionaries, were living, Japanese customs and culture and Sharpless' efforts to apply the knowledge to her behavior; referring to Robert Simkin, a Haverford College missionary in China (Feb. 4, 1911); Japan Yearly Meeting; teaching duties; impact of a flood (July 27, 1941); making decisions about whether to stay in Japan with the help of Ayusawa, Hirakawa and others (Aug. 4, 1941); references to the Bowles'; impact of the war on community of foreigners, and living in Japan when most foreigners have left; also one photograph of Edith Sharpless with friends"
